Jet Ski Storage

Jet ski cover

Make sure your jet ski is clean and dry before storing it.

Knowing how to store your jet ski is an important step in keeping your jet ski up and running. The tips below will help you learn more about jet ski storage and maintenance.

Get It Ready

Before putting your jet ski away for storage, make sure it is clean and dry. For long-term storage, you’ll also want to make sure you flush the system, remove the battery, and follow any other maintenance tips in your owner’s manual.

Store It

Indoor storage is your best option. It keeps your jet ski protected from weather damage and UV exposure. A climate-controlled environment is ideal, but even a garage or shed is better than outdoor storage.

Cover It

Whether you store your jet ski indoors or out, we recommend using a jet ski cover to protect your PWC. A jet ski cover keeps out dust, dirt, and debris when your PWC is stored indoors. For outdoor storage, the cover also protects your PWC from rain, snow, UV rays, and harsh weather.

Let It Breathe

Make sure the jet ski cover fits snugly and is made with fabric that will repel water but still allow the jet ski to “breathe.” Airflow underneath the cover prevents moisture buildup, rust, mold, and mildew.

Trailering a PWC

Use a trailerable PWC cover to protect your jet ski on the road.

When it comes to trailering your jet ski, a trailerable PWC cover can help protect your boat, keep it dry, and prevent road grime or gravel from marring your boat’s finish. Below are some tips on securing your trailerable cover for highway travel.

  • Only use a trailerable cover to protect your PWC on the road. Do not use a storage cover that is not approved for trailering use.
  • Make sure the PWC cover is installed tightly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing your cover. All trailering straps should be attached and tied down tightly.
  • Make sure the gas tank door is zipped shut.
  • Secure any loose strap ends. If the straps are left to flap in the wind, they can cause damage to the cover or to your PWC.
  • Before driving, recheck all straps.
  • After driving for a few miles, stop and check all the straps again. Tighten straps as needed to make sure the PWC and cover are secure. If you are trailering the PWC for a long distance, check the PWC and trailering straps every time you stop for gas or food.

Do I Need a Jet Ski Cover?

A jet ski cover protects your PWC from the elements.

A jet ski cover protects your PWC from the elements.

Jet ski covers are an easy and inexpensive way to protect your boat from exposure to the elements, both for trailering and storage.

Trailering

When you are trailering your jet ski, road grime, mud, and dirt can get on your boat. These abrasive elements wear away at your boat’s finish. To protect your PWC on the road, use a trailerable jet ski cover. Make sure the cover is installed properly and tied down tightly before trailering. Stop every so often to check the tie downs. Retighten as necessary.

Storage

Whether you store your jet ski indoors or outside, a jet ski cover can keep your boat dry and clean. If you store your jet ski outdoors, a cover can protect against damage from UV rays, rain, snow, salt, sand and grit, dirt, and dust. Your jet ski will last longer and stay in better condition if you protect it with a cover.

Even if you store your jet ski in a garage or shed, you’ll still need a PWC cover to prevent dust and dirt buildup. Make sure the cover is equipped with adequate ventilation to allow moisture and condensation to evaporate.

Before covering your jet ski, make sure it is completely dry. Moisture trapped underneath the cover can damage your boat.

Jet Ski Cover Buying Guide

This jet ski cover includes a venting system to allow air circulation.

This jet ski cover includes a venting system to allow air circulation.

To keep your jet ski in top shape, it’s important to protect it with a jet ski cover. Finding the right jet ski cover is as simple as knowing what type of cover you need and measuring your jet ski. Follow the steps below to find the best jet ski cover for your needs.

  1. Decide whether you need a trailerable cover or a regular storage cover.
  2. Trailerable covers can be used for storage and for trailering on an open trailer. They are often made with thicker material, fit tightly, and come with tie down straps to keep the cover in place. Storage covers are not approved for trailering but are designed to protect your jet ski from sun and weather damage.

Your cover should include a built-in venting system. Vents allow air to circulate underneath the cover, preventing moisture damage and discouraging the growth of mold and mildew. A venting system also reduces lofting, where the wind billows underneath the cover. Too much wind tearing at your jet ski cover can rip it apart in no time.

  3. Measure your jet ski.
  4. To find the correct measurements for your jet ski, measure the centerline length straight from the bow to the stern. Do not measure up and over any components of the jet ski.

Next, measure the beam (the flat width of the boat at its widest point). This is usually located near the middle of the jet ski.

  5. Use these measurements to find the right size jet ski cover.
  6. Using a sizing chart or the measurements listed for each cover, find the right size for your jet ski. If your jet ski is between two sizes, choose the larger size to ensure a proper fit.

Choosing a Jet Ski Cover

PWC Jet Ski Cover (available in 3 sizes)

You ride your jet ski hard on the water. To make sure your watercraft performs up to its potential, it’s important to keep it covered between rides and during the off-season. The sun’s UV rays and the constant exposure to rain, snow, dew, and other moisture can damage your jet ski. A PWC cover can keep your watercraft clean, dry, and ready to ride at a moment’s notice.

Jet ski covers are available with a universal or custom fit. Custom covers offer a near perfect fit, but be prepared to pay the price. Universal and semi-custom covers are more affordable and offer an adjustable fit that provides superior protection for your ride.

In order to find the right size jet ski cover, make sure you get the right measurements for your watercraft. Measure from the front nose to the longest rear point for proper sizing. Then choose the cover that best fits the dimensions of your boat.

Why Do I Need a Breathable Boat Cover?

Protect your jet ski with a breathable boat cover.

Protect your jet ski with a breathable boat cover.

One of the most important things to look for in a boat or PWC cover is breathability. Without a venting system to allow moisture to evaporate, the moisture gets trapped inside your boat, which can cause a number of problems.

a

What Happens When Moisture Gets Trapped?

First, trapped water or condensation can damage the boat’s interior, including the bilge, hull, and fabric materials. Cushions tend to soak up moisture, creating ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth. If the cushions are removable, the best option is to remove the cushions and store them in a dry, protected indoor area.

Second, trapped moisture can damage the boat cover. Mold and mildew thrive in moist environments, and your boat cover is no exception. Mold growth will weaken the cover and compromise the protection that it provides for your boat or jet ski.

How Do I Make Sure My Boat Cover Can Breathe?

Even if the boat cover you purchase is clearly labeled as breathable, there are a few things you need to remember in order for the venting system to work properly.

First, throwing a tarp (or any other covering) over the boat cover will negate the venting system by trapping the moisture underneath the tarp. Do not put anything else on top of a breathable cover.

Second, keep the cover free of dirt and debris, which can plug up the breathable material and promote mold and mildew growth. Wash the cover as needed to keep it clean.

Finally, don’t allow pools of water to stand on the cover. They can compromise the water resistant properties of the cover, which leaves your boat vulnerable to moisture damage.

Take good care of your boat and your breathable cover, and your boat and cover will last for years to come!

Boat Cover Fabric

The type of fabric used to make a boat cover or PWC cover affects how durable, breathable, and waterproof it will be. Not all boat covers are equal in quality. Below are some factors that affect the quality of a cover.

Type of Fabric
Boat cover made with marine-grade polyester fabric

Boat cover made with marine-grade polyester fabric

  1. Poly/Cotton Blend
  2. The cheapest boat covers are made from a poly/cotton blend. This fabric breaks down faster and doesn’t protect the boat as well as other types of fabric. Covers made from a poly/cotton blend are typically only under warranty for a year and are only suitable for mild climates and minimal use.

  3. Marine-Grade Polyester
  4. Marine-grade polyester is a much more durable fabric than poly/cotton blend. These boat covers are slightly more expensive, but the durability is well worth the cost. Polyester boat covers offer an ideal balance of strong protection and cost effectiveness. They resist wear and tear and mildew growth much better than poly/cotton covers.

  5. Acrylic
  6. Acrylic boat covers are high end covers that offer superior protection; however, they are also more expensive to produce, which means that their cost is much higher than for other types of fabric.

Fabric Weight and Weave

In most cases, the heavier the fabric, the more durable it will be. However, durability is also affected by the tightness of the weave. A boat cover with a lighter weight and tighter weave may be more durable than a cover with a heavier weight but a coarser weave.

Fabric Color

Reds and yellows tend to fade the fastest. Blues seem to keep their color the longest. A UV protective coating will make the color last even longer.
